Ancient Greek Language and Literature Competition

Since 2017, Pierce – The American College of Greece has been organizing the Ancient Greek Language and Literature Competition with the approval of the Institute of Educational Policy (IEP) and the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, in collaboration with and under the auspices of the Directorate of Secondary Education of B’ Athens.

The goal of the competition is to promote the study of Ancient Greek Language and Literature among students, introducing them to a broader range of ancient texts to understand the timeless nature of ideas and values. It also aims to help them realize that Modern Greek is deeply rooted in Ancient Greek, representing its evolution and continuity. Additionally, the competition encourages students to appreciate that the intellectual creations of Ancient Greeks are intrinsically linked to modern Greek culture and have significantly contributed to the foundation of European and Western civilization. The competition is open to first-year students of General Lyceums (both public and private) within the Attica region. Participation is optional and requires parental consent. There is no financial cost for participating students.
