The title "Trad-PIERCE-ional" is a creative play on words, combining the name of our school, Pierce, with the word Traditional, highlighting the program's connection to Greece's rich musical heritage.

Our school's traditional choir is already actively engaged in a variety of performances and collaborations. It has participated in school events, contributed to cultural initiatives, and recorded traditional songs and Christmas carols for the animated film The Gleaner (I Stachomazochtra), which will soon be released in cinemas.

In the coming school year, our goals become even more ambitious. We have been invited to record and give an interview at the ERT Concert Hall, and we are excited to begin producing our very first music album.

Through this hands-on workshop, students will develop a meaningful connection with traditional singing while discovering a variety of traditional and rare Greek musical instruments, including the kanun (kanonaki), tsabouna (Aegean bagpipe), daouli (drum), lafta, laouto (lute), oud, lyres, and many more.

Trad-PIERCE-ional is an inspiring, short-term music program that combines creativity, innovation, and cultural heritage, offering students a unique opportunity to explore the richness of Greek traditional music in an engaging and enjoyable way.

Goals

  1. Students will enjoy meaningful musical experiences while expressing themselves creatively and developing their vocal skills through both solo and choral singing. They will become familiar with traditional Greek music, its instruments, and its distinctive musical elements.

Program Description

In the Grades 1–2 of Primary School, students take their first steps in programming and engineering through three different cycles of activities. They begin by exploring Simple Machines, such as gears, pulleys, and levers, and by creating moving constructions with the help of motors, introducing them to basic concepts of engineering and electricity. They then become familiar with the fundamental principles of programming without the use of a screen through the Kids First Coding & Robotics robot, using command cards to guide the robot. The cycle concludes with Scratch Junior, where children transition to a visual, block-based programming environment and create stories, animations, and simple games. Through this progressive learning journey, children develop computational thinking and problem-solving skills, while gradually becoming familiar with the logic of programming.

Goals

  1. Understanding basic engineering concepts (simple machines, motion transmission) and applying them to simple constructions
  2. Familiarization with the fundamental concepts of programming (sequence, repetition, conditions) through non-digital and visual tools
  3. Development of algorithmic thinking and the ability to solve problems step by step
  4. Cultivation of creativity through the design of simple programs, stories and constructions

At the end of each thematic unit, students present their creations as part of school events: The use of a construction with simple machines and a motor as a replacement for human presence, the animations from their Scratch Jr projects, which will be based on a thematic unit, and the process of solving an issue by simulating it through the steps of the Kids First Coding kit. Upon completion of the program, students participate in teams in the Panhellenic STEM Competition in the “Open Grades 1–4 Primary School” category.

In the Grades 3–4 of Primary School, students deepen their understanding of the use of microcontrollers in STEM, building on the programming knowledge they have already acquired. The first cycle introduces the concept of interaction through the BBC micro, with students becoming familiar with the board’s built-in components and creating their first programs. Next, through Cutebot Football, students program the CuteBot robot to operate according to their requirements, applying their knowledge in a practical, team-based competitive setting centered on football. The cycle concludes with BaSTEMball, where students, organized into alliance teams, design and control TPBot-type remote-controlled robots in basketball matches on a specially designed court. In both competitive cycles, particular emphasis is placed on sportsmanship, fair play and the development of attitudes that eliminate every form of violence in sports.

Goals

  1. Understanding how microcontrollers operate and how they are applied in robotic systems
  2. Developing the ability to program and control remote-controlled robots
  3. Fostering teamwork, strategic thinking and sportsmanship through competitive robotics activities
  4. Developing attitudes of fair play and respect, with the aim of eliminating violence in sports

At the end of each thematic unit, students present their creations as part of school events: Taking measurements of physical quantities through the use of the micro and sensors, as well as the most exciting spectacle! The organization of an internal championship based on the two units and the two sports they have prepared for in the corresponding unit. At the end of the program, they participate in the Panhellenic STEM Competition in the “BaSTEMball” and “2x2 Football” categories, promoting sportsmanship among their classmates. In each cycle, students combine design, 3D printing and programming to create functional constructions adapted to the needs of each scientific field, incorporating elements of Artificial Intelligence into their operation. Beyond technical skills, the program places particular emphasis on understanding what Artificial Intelligence is and how it should be used correctly, helping students develop critical thinking, knowledge and responsible attitudes toward its capabilities and limitations.

Goals

Young engineers will:

  1. Understand basic concepts of Artificial Intelligence and how it works
  2. Develop design, 3D printing and programming skills through the creation of robotic constructions
  3. Apply AI knowledge to realistic scientific scenarios (environment, chemistry, physics)
  4. Develop critical thinking and responsible attitudes toward the proper use of Artificial Intelligence

At the end of each thematic unit, students present their creations as part of school events: How they managed to solve an authentic problem using Artificial Intelligence, by designing and creating parts themselves, which they adapted in order to complete a mission. Upon completion of the program, students participate in teams in the Panhellenic STEM Competition in the “Open Grades 4–6 Primary School” category.

School Bus Pricing (after the Afternoon Programs)

In the case of full use of the school bus (two trips for the morning program) or use of the school bus only for the return from the morning program to home, an annual surcharge of 165€ will be added to the existing fares, regardless of the number of days participating in the afternoon programs.

In all other cases, the charge for the afternoon bus service is 145€ per day of use annually.

The school buses for afternoon activities will serve main routes.
