The Department of Philology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens organized the 1st Panhellenic Linguistics Olympiad, an idea that belongs to Pierce's student, Marianna Argeitis!
The competition is aimed at students who love languages and puzzles, and want to practice their analytical and synthetic thinking through the processing of linguistic data. Having the same philosophy as the Linguistics Olympiads that have been held for many years in foreign countries, the goal of the competition is to bring students into contact with linguistic data, to analyze them and answer the corresponding questions. Prior knowledge of languages is not necessary for participation in the competition. The questions of the competition are solved with the same logical procedures we follow when solving a crossword, a cryptogram or a sudoku! So, all someone needs to participate in the competition is logical thinking and a passion for solving puzzles.
The award ceremony was held on Monday, June 16, and Pierce student, Andreas Christopoulos (A' Lyceum), was awarded for winning 8th place, with a score of 80/100.
The Competition was certified by the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOLING) and our country's national team competed in the International Olympiad held in Taiwan, in July 2025.
Warm congratulations to Marianna, who also received an award and who was the inspiration for the Competition!
