On November 19, 2025, Grade 9 students had the opportunity to interview Captain Elina Skarpeta, airline captain with Aegean/Olympic Airlines, who visited our school and shared her journey, challenges, and experiences as a commercial pilot.
The event was organized as part of the “Women in Aviation” project, in which students explore the role of women in aviation by comparing pioneering female pilots of the past with contemporary professionals. Through research, discussion, and biography studies, they examine whether — and how — stereotypes, obstacles, and opportunities have changed over time.
Captain Skarpeta spoke openly about her studies, her first flights, the responsibility that comes with being in the cockpit, and the importance of teamwork and calm decision-making. She emphasized that perseverance, consistent effort, and believing in oneself can open doors — even in fields that have traditionally been considered male-dominated.
Students asked thoughtful questions, engaged in meaningful discussion, and gained valuable insights about equality, confidence, and choosing studies and careers free from prejudice.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Captain Elina Skarpeta for inspiring our students and showing them that with determination and passion, we can overcome obstacles and truly reach… new heights.
