Scenography Workshop for IB Theatre Students

Lyceum
23 November 2025

On November 23, 2025, students of IB Theatre (IB1 and IB2) had the opportunity to participate in a specialized Scenography Workshop, led by professional scenographer and costume designer Georgia Bourda.

The session introduced students to the fundamental principles of visual storytelling in theatre, highlighting the decisive role scenography plays in shaping the audience’s experience. Through theoretical analysis and practical examples, students explored how stage space, materials, color, and costume function as active narrative tools.

During the workshop, students examined significant artistic movements and their influence on contemporary stage practice, observing how visual languages evolve over time. Ms. Bourda presented examples from her professional work, offering valuable insight into the creative and technical processes involved in developing a cohesive theatrical world.

Particular interest was generated by the comparative analysis of A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen. Students explored the differences between the original 1879 production and the contemporary directorial approach of Thomas Ostermeier at the Schaubühne in 2017. Through this process, they gained a deeper understanding of how scenographic choices reflect social context, directorial intent, and shifts in theatrical aesthetics.

The workshop was directly connected to the IB Theatre curriculum, specifically the Production Proposal (Internal Assessment). Students were guided in the conception and development of their own scenographic and costume design ideas and undertook a creative assignment based on the scenographic approach to A Doll’s House.

The day concluded with highly positive outcomes, offering students meaningful artistic and analytical experiences that strengthened their understanding of scenography as a fundamental element of theatrical creation and interpretation.
