Leadership for Change, Decode the news with The Economist Educational Foundation

23 October 2025

This year, B Lyceum students become "news decoders" in the English class. They will develop the critical-thinking, creative problem-solving and media-literacy skills to navigate through fake news and polarisation. Students will have the opportunity to  learn from leading experts through lessons that unpick the current media landscape, including the impact of AI, social media and press regulation.

On Wednesday 22nd October, Year 11 students explored how to decode the news and understand the importance of truth, bias and reliable sources. The lesson featured student polls, classroom discussions and insights from a journalist at The Economist and globally renowned ocean explorer Dr Sylvia Earle.

The programme concludes with students pitching a "Project for Change" to improve media literacy within their school or local community.

The Leadership for Change Prize offers students the chance to submit their projects as part of a global competition. Winners will receive up to £1,000 and mentorship to bring their projects to life.

The competition is organized by the prestigious magazine The Economist - The Educational Foundation, in collaboration with Rolex.
