The initial Fab Lab/Maker Space lessons provided the children with an opportunity to demonstrate their existing knowledge and understanding of the room's equipment and machines. This review solidified the foundation of information and skills they had developed last year. The children used a basic design program and modeling materials to create the most suitable word for their class to animate. They worked together to manipulate and capture images using the Stop Motion Studio application, then reviewed the results.
Next, the basic coding the students were introduced to last year was expanded upon through a scenario of an automated car navigating an urban environment. The students worked in groups to determine travel details and routes, then formulated and input the necessary codes. Obstacles were introduced to make the task more realistic and challenging.
The group's first mini project in the Maker Space has started with research and discussions on how and why they should upcycle everyday materials/products. Their goal is to create a plant pot that meets the needs of their classroom, allowing them to produce their own source of oxygen.
