Important change: completion of Lab 3 new requirement for participation in the competition and certification (instead of Lab 5)

Dear Participants,

Based on the feedback you provided us, we now have a better understanding of where your teams stand at this point; we have also realized the hard work you have all put in and the challenges you have faced. In this first year of Racecar Challenge and miniRacecar, which had its share of uncertainties and delays due to pandemic-related issues, we want to make sure that your efforts and that of your students is recognized, and for this reason we are making the following adjustments to the competition:
• Students who will have completed miniRacecar up to at least Lab 3 by June 15, 2022, can participate in the competition; the virtual tracks to be used in the competition only require content up to Lab 3. Some of the “short cuts” require content from Lab 4 and/or 5, but the students will still be able to complete the race without the shortcuts.
• The Beaver Works Summer Institute will issue a certificate to the students who will have completed at least Lab 3, specifying the level achieved, with a distinction for the students who will have completed the full 5 Labs.
• Students who will not have completed at least the first 3 labs by June 15 (and won’t be able to participate in the competition) will still have until July 31, 2022 to try and complete them to obtain a certificate.
The competition will take place with the possibility of physical attendance on June 18, 2022, on the premises of Pierce ACG in Athens and will be streamed simultaneously. For those of your teams which will participate in the competition, we will ask you to upload their code onto a link we will soon communicate to you, by no later than June 15, 2022 at 18:00. We will send you more detailed information about the competition in the following two weeks.

To prepare for the issuance of the certificates and for the competition, we kindly request that you fill in the attached spreadsheet and send it at [email protected] by June 3, 2022, to confirm the name and email of your students who are attending miniRacecar (with English characters, because these will be the names used for their individual certificates), which one among them you expect will be participating in the competition, and for those, their team’s name and whether they will also participate in person. Please make sure that the email addresses you will give us are exactly the same as the ones your students are using to log into BWSI’s platform, as their email is used by BWSI as an identifier.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions, and we are very much looking forward to seeing you soon !

February 7, 2022 – Announcement with regard to the final competition at BWSI’s and BWSI’s 2022 Summer Program

Owing to the continuing uncertainty created by the coronavirus, Beaver Works Summer Institute announced that it will not host students on-campus for its 2022 summer programs. It was a difficult decision to stay a virtual program again, so our programs which are open to high school students will be conducted online instead of in-person.
As a result, BWSI´ s summer program and final competition will be held online. This means that the team which will win Racecar Challenge will attend the last week of BWSI’s summer program and take part in the final competition online as well. We are very much aware that this will disappoint some of you, as we were, but BWSI’s summer program remains a very high-level and unique educational experience, attended by highly motivated students from all over the US and beyond, as will be the final competition.
