University Counseling

The Pierce University Counseling program is available to guide students and parents on the university exploration, application and admissions process, locally, but also in the U.S., U.K. Europe and other international locations. The process begins by assessing students' skills, interests, abilities and life goals and aligning their IB DP courses or other courses of the mainstream program, with the university requirements of their top-choice schools.

Our holistic approach includes providing students with unique experiences to grow academically, socially and civically to prepare them for college life and allow them to enter the most competitive schools around the world.

UK GOVERNMENT has confirmed that EU students will continue to remain eligible for undergraduate, master’s, postgraduate and advanced learner financial support in academic year 2018 to 2019 (see link).

The decision means EU students applying for an undergraduate or master’s course at an English university or further education institution in the 2018 to 2019 academic year will continue to have access to student loans and grants, even if the course concludes after the UK’s exit from the EU.

EU students are eligible for home fee status, which means they are charged the same tuition fees as UK students. Other non-EU, international students do not have their tuition fees capped in this way.

EU nationals will also remain eligible to apply for Research Council PhD studentships at UK institutions for 2018 to 2019 to help cover costs for the duration of their study.

SCOTLAND GIVES EU STUDENTS GUARANTEE OF FREE TUITION FOR 2018-19: European Union students studying in Scotland and enrolling in 2018-19 will be guaranteed free tuition for the duration of their courses, John Swinney, Scotland’s deputy first minister, has announced. The move puts pressure on the other UK governments to make equivalent guarantees following the Brexit vote.

On Wednesday, October 5, Ms.  Janet Irons, Senior Admissions Officer from Harvard University met with students, parents and administrators, in an assembly, to discuss the Harvard admissions process for international students. Harvard is highly selective, accepting roughly 5% of all applicants.  While international students receiving full scholarships are competitive, those students qualifying have an exceptional profile of high grades, top scores in the SAT/ACT test, plus, 2 subject tests, and TOEFL.

A competitive candidate is a student who has diverse experiences and interests, is engaged in the school or local community, involved in extracurricular activities, is knowledgeable about the world and a global minded citizen. The ideal candidate is mature, self-motivated and self-directed, who exemplifies leadership skills and is positive role model in their school community.

You can find more information about what admissions officers look for in a Harvard candidate at: https://college.harvard.edu/admissions/application-process/what-we-look

Here is an interesting fact about financing a degree in Harvard: "Admitted students with annual family incomes less than $65,000 pay nothing; those with incomes up to $150,000 pay 0-10 percent.  Loans are not required.  Students on financial aid, as in the past, continue to contribute to the cost of their own education by working 10 to 12 hours a week during the school year and by working a summer job."

Ms. Irons urges all international students to visit this website because the information is helpful and relevant to non-UK students too: http://www.harvard-ukadmissions.co.uk

You may also receive information regarding international student applications from the President of the Harvard Club of Greece, Mr. Xenophon Paparrigopoulos. He can be reached at: hcgreece@post.harvard.edu

Tufts University, Asst. Director of Admissions, Yulia Korovikov, met with parents and students of the Lyceum on September 16, to answer questions about their undergraduate programs in the School of International Relations, Law & Diplomacy, School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Tufts University is one of the most competitive private research universities in the United States, and is located in Medford, Massachusetts. Ms. Korovikov discussed the college application process, availability of scholarships and financial aide. She stressed the importance of preparing in advance for the university admissions process, to be organized and know important deadlines. She also advised taking the SAT Test/ Subjects tests or the ACT test, and an appropriate language proficiency test such as the TOEFL or IELTS. One of the most important criteria however, said Ms. Korovokov, is a strong personal statement and essays that highlight the unique profile of each student.
