Studies Abroad

The Counseling Center for Studies Abroad provides Pierce students and recent alumni the opportunity to explore their options for furthering their education in countries outside Greece, in an environment that fosters learning, supports new ideas and offers advice to ensure success in all educational endeavors.  Students are given information regarding university study in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries in Europe, as well as guidelines for finding schools and programs that suit their needs. When a student is ready to begin the application process, he or she is guided through the process step by step, from writing a personal statement to selecting teachers as referees. In addition, information sessions for students and parents, university representative visits and information sessions with Pierce alumni who are studying abroad are arranged throughout the academic year. The Counseling Center for Studies Abroad aims to help students open the doors to higher education and a successful future.

Ms. Ellen Froustis, M.Ed., M.A., Pierce University Counselor, is available to provide information regarding studies at universities outside Greece: tel. 210 600 9800, ext. 1064 or by email at efroustis@acg.edu

The decision means EU students applying for an undergraduate or master’s course at an English university or further education institution in the 2018 to 2019 academic year will continue to have access to student loans and grants, even if the course concludes after the UK’s exit from the EU.

On Wednesday, October 5, Ms. Janet Irons, Senior Admissions Officer from Harvard University met with students, parents and administrators, in an assembly, to discuss the Harvard admissions process for international students. Harvard is highly selective, accepting roughly 5% of all applicants.  While international students receiving full scholarships are competitive, those students qualifying have an exceptional profile of high grades, top scores in the SAT/ACT test, plus, 2 subject tests, and TOEFL.

A competitive candidate is a student who has diverse experiences and interests, is engaged in the school or local community, involved in extracurricular activities, is knowledgeable about the world and a global minded citizen. The ideal candidate is mature, self-motivated and self-directed, who exemplifies leadership skills and is positive role model in their school community. You can find more information about what admissions officers look for in a Harvard candidate at : https://college.harvard.edu/admissions/application-process/what-we-look

Here is an interesting fact about financing a degree in Harvard: "Admitted students with annual family incomes less than $65,000 pay nothing; those with incomes up to $150,000 pay 0-10 percent.  Loans are not required.  Students on financial aid, as in the past, continue to contribute to the cost of their own education by working 10 to 12 hours a week during the school year and by working a summer job."

Ms. Irons urges all international students to visit this website because the information is helpful and relevant to non-UK students too:  http://www.harvard-ukadmissions.co.uk

You may also receive information regarding international student applications from the President of the Harvard Club of Greece, Mr. Xenophon Paparrigopoulos. He can be reached at: hcgreece@post.harvard.edu

Tufts University Assistant Director of Admissions, Yulia Korovikov, met with parents and students of the Lyceum on September 16 to answer questions about their undergraduate programs in the School of International Relations, Law & Diplomacy, School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts

Tufts University is one of the most competitive private research universities in the United States, and is located in Medford, Massachusetts. Ms. Korovikov discussed the college application process, availability of scholarships and financial aide. She stressed the importance of preparing in advance for the university admissions process, to be organized and know important deadlines. She also advised taking the SAT Test/ Subjects tests or the ACT test, and an appropriate language proficiency test such as the TOEFL or IELTS. One of the most important criteria, however,  is a strong personal statement and essays that highlight the unique profile of each student, said Ms. Korovokov.
